While the word Schizophrenia goes back as far back until the Egyptian times the illness we had associated ourselves with doesn't follow. The word Schizophrenia is younger than one hundred years old. In 1887 Dr. Emile Kraeplin identified Schizophrenia as a mental illness. He was the first to make a distinction in the psychotic disorders between what he called "dementia praecox"( which meant early dementia) and manic depression. Kraepelin believed that dementia praecox was primarily a disease of the brain. Kraepelin named the disorder 'dementia praecox' to distinguish it from other forms of dementia (such as Alzheimer's disease) which typically occurs later in life. He coined this term because his studies focused on young adults with dementia.
